New east-west gas link opened

The Queen’s Commissioner for Groningen province, Max van den Berg, has formally opened the new gas pipeline connection between Grijpskerk and Wieringermeer and the new compressor station. The ceremony took place at the new compressor station in Grijpskerk.

The construction of the GWWL pipeline, as it is called, gives Gasunie a major new link for the transport of natural gas to Noord-Holland and provides the western Netherlands with a secure long-term supply of gas.

Because the GWWL pipeline is also connected to the BBL, the pipeline linking Noord-Holland with the United Kingdom, which was taken into use in 2006, it will also enable a higher volume of gas to be supplied to the UK market. As a result, the GWWL will also increase opportunities for gas distribution companies. This project, which has generated over 1,250 man-years in labour, involved a total investment of approximately € 350 million.

Both the BBL and the GWWL were given priority status by the European Commission, which, together with the Dutch government, attaches great importance to the expansion of trans-border gas connections as an efficient way of securing the longer-term energy requirements of the EU Member States.
