HyWay 27
The “go” has been given to develop a national hydrogen network. HyWay 27 has shown that using the national natural gas network to realise a national hydrogen network is technically possible and socially/economically desirable. Hydrogen is necessary to realise the Dutch ambition for a sustainable and climate-neutral economy. In response to the report, Yeşilgöz-Zegerius, State Secretary for Energy and Climate, said:
"Hydrogen is needed to make our industry sustainable and keep jobs here in the Netherlands. If we do it right, our country can also earn a good living from it. As far as I am concerned, the government must provide the right preconditions, such as infrastructure, so that companies can make the necessary transition to sustainability here in the Netherlands. The fact that, with a few adjustments, we can safely and cost-effectively convert our excellent gas network into a transport network for hydrogen offers the Dutch industry a major sustainability opportunity that we must not miss."
Gasunie has been asked to start the development of this national hydrogen network. This decision is a follow-up on one of the recommendations in the HyWay 27 report. However, the report and the recommendations presented, shows that more is needed for the transition to be successful. This applies to coordination, regulation and financing, among other things.
More information on the recommendations are presented in the infographic below.
The recommendations in the infographic are a follow-up of the presented conclusions that:
- A transport system for hydrogen is needed to efficiently connect users and suppliers to each other and to storage in a climate-neutral economy.
- Transport capacity within and between regions is already needed before 2030.
- Part of the existing national natural gas network can be made available and technically suitable for interregional transport of hydrogen.
- It is desirable to reuse the existing natural gas network for this purpose as this is cheaper than building a new infrastructure.
