CO₂: capture, utilisation and storage

In order to overcome the challenge that is the transition to renewable energy, there are various ways to prevent the concentration of CO₂ in the atmosphere from growing any further. One of them is to capture carbon emissions and store them underground: CCS.

The first step in CCS is to capture CO₂ from industry. There are several techniques that allow companies to separate the CO₂ during or after the production process.

CO₂ is the chemical formula for the molecule carbon dioxide, which consists of one atom of carbon bonded to two oxygen atoms. Carbon dioxide is released during the complete combustion of carbon and carbon-containing compounds. Capture, storage and utilisation of CO₂ together are also known as CCUS, Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage.
