The gas comes aboveground again near to the place of destination. This usually occurs at a metering and regulating station, where the high pressure that was necessary for national transport is brought down again. This is where we also add the familiar odour to the natural gas. Natural gas is odourless by nature, but adding this odour means that everyone can smell the presence of natural gas. It’s much safer that way. Gasunie has 93 metering and regulating stations.
