Impressive transport marks milestone for H₂CAST installation
News article
A logistical feat that captured plenty of attention during these December days: a massive component of the H2CAST installation began an impressive journey from Rotterdam, traveling by both water and road, with Wilhelmshaven as an intermediate stop and Etzel as the final destination. This trip was not only a logistical achievement but also represents a symbolic milestone. With the arrival of these components, key building blocks of the installation are now on site, and H2CAST remains fully on track to be commissioned at the beginning of 2026.
The H2CAST project plays a key role in developing the future hydrogen infrastructure in Northwest Europe. In Etzel, STORAG and Gasunie are constructing an innovative test facility to investigate the safe storage and purification of hydrogen in two existing salt caverns. Above ground, modular installations will clean, dry, and pressurize the hydrogen. Advanced measurement and control technology ensures continuous quality monitoring and balancing.
Planning and Outlook
All work has so far been carried out according to schedule. After commissioning in early 2026, an intensive testing phase will follow, with initial results expected by the end of that year. This pilot will provide valuable insights for large-scale hydrogen storage and contribute to the energy transition by increasing flexibility and security of supply.
Strategic Importance
H2CAST is a joint initiative of leading partners (from Germany and the Netherlands) in the energy sector and represents an important building block for the future hydrogen economy. The project supports the ambition to make hydrogen widely available as a sustainable energy carrier and strengthens the position of the Northwest German region and Wilhelmshaven as a hydrogen hub in Europe.
