Plans for North Sea Canal Area Hydrogen Network Open for Public Review

Hynetwork, a wholly owned subsidiary of Gasunie, and the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy (EZK) have taken a new step in the development of the North Sea Canal Area Hydrogen Network. From 18 September through 29 October 2026, the draft project decision, the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), and the draft permits will be available for public review. Stakeholders can review the documents and submit their comments during this period.
The North Sea Canal Area Hydrogen Network will become part of the future national hydrogen network. Wherever possible, existing natural gas pipelines will be repurposed. In locations where this is not feasible, new pipelines and installations will be constructed. The planned route runs through the municipalities of Beverwijk, Velsen, Zaanstad, Haarlemmermeer and Amsterdam.
Connection to National and International Hydrogen Infrastructure
The network will provide industrial companies in the North Sea Canal Area with access to hydrogen as a sustainable energy carrier and feedstock. In addition, it will connect the region to other Dutch industrial clusters, hydrogen storage facilities and international hydrogen infrastructure. This will provide access to a broader hydrogen market.
Supporting Industrial Decarbonisation
Hydrogen plays an important role in decarbonising sectors that cannot be fully electrified. For many industrial processes, hydrogen offers a sustainable alternative as both a fuel and a feedstock. Connecting to the national hydrogen network will help companies in the North Sea Canal Area reduce the carbon footprint of their operations and strengthen the region’s position as a future-proof industrial and port hub.
