CO₂ emission reduction

Emissions

We use energy to keep the gas grid pressurised, to mix natural gas with nitrogen and to compensate for friction losses during transport. Using energy causes CO2 emissions. Methane is released during the management and maintenance of our infrastructure.

Current status 4% more CO₂ (compared with 2020)
2020 Starting year
2030 Final goal

We are not on track to meet our 2030 target (Scope 1+2). This is largely due to our LNG terminal EemsEnergyTerminal, which has been operational since the fourth quarter of 2022. The LNG is regasified using heat. We are considering extending the operation of the EmsEnergyTerminal beyond 2027. This would mean a permanent increase in our Scope 1+2 emissions, which would put the 2030 emissions target out of reach; unless we can also draw up a substantial emissions reduction package for the relaunching EmsEnergyTerminal. We are currently considering this situation and investigating what emission reduction options are feasible in the event of an operating extension.
