The EemsGas project (formerly Torrgas Delfzijl) aims to establish a commercial gasification plant in Delfzijl where waste wood from recycling is converted into green gas. Gasunie is developing this plant in collaboration with Perpetual Next. The plant will use technology developed by TNO.
The technology
The plant combines three technologies developed by TNO: MILENA, OLGA and ESME. Together, these technologies form a system in which waste wood is converted into green gas:
The first step is the gasification of the waste wood. This is carried out using the MILENA gasifier, in which waste wood is converted into product gas.
This product gas is then purified using the OLGA system. This system removes all tar and dust particles from the gas. These particles are subsequently used as an energy source for the MILENA gasifier.
Finally, the purified product gas is converted into green gas using ESME methanation technology. In this process, all compounds are converted into methane of the correct quality to be fed into the Dutch natural gas network.
EemsGas project receives commitment for € 150 million operating subsidy for green gas production
Date
EemsGas Project, with an investment of € 100 million becoming one of the largest production facilities for biomethane (green gas) in the Netherlands, has received an SDE++ subsidy grant from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO). This provides an operating subsidy worth € 149.8 million. The subsidy gives EemsGas certainty of operating income for the next fifteen years. EemsGas is a 50/50 joint venture in which sustainable raw materials producer Perpetual Next and Gasunie, the leading Dutch natural gas infrastructure and transportation company, have been working together since 2022 to produce large volumes of biomethane from waste wood.
Since the formation of the joint venture between Gasunie and Perpetual Next last February 2022, the project has continued full steam ahead with the focus on finalising the technical design of the plant. The completion forms an important basis for being able to make a Final investment decision.
Torrgas Delfzijl continues as EemsGas
Date
Recently, the partners Perpetual Next and Gasunie New Energy have decided to continue the Torrgas Delfzijl project under a new name: 'EemsGas'. The reason for the name change is to create clarity about the current shareholders Perpetual Next and Gasunie in relation to the Torrgas company.
With the EemsGas project, the two partners are exploring the possibilities of building a commercial gasification plant in Delfzijl, based on woody residual streams from recycling. The installation will make use of the technology of the company Torrgas, with which green gas can be produced from syngas and distributed in a sustainable manner. In this way, the dependency of fossil resources is further reduced.
The new project name EemsGas is chosen because of the plant's location in the Eemsdelta region. In addition, this name change avoids possible confusion regarding the involvement of the company Torrgas. With the project takeover by Perpetual Next and Gasunie in February 2022, Torrgas will no longer be a shareholder but remains involved as supplier of the technology.
New green gas plant coming to Delfzijl the Netherlands
In the second half of 2020, the final preparations will be made with the aim of starting construction of the plant in Delfzijl in 2021. The plant is expected to become operational in the first half of 2021.
Gasunie expresses confidence
Date
Gasunie has expressed its confidence in the further development of the infrastructural side of the technology and is offering its support for the next steps towards the construction of a larger, 25MW installation.
SDE+ grant awarded
Date
On 6 August 2019, the producer was awarded an SDE+ grant by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency. An important precondition for the project has thus been met.
Torrgas pilot plant developed further
Date
In the period from 2016 to 2018, the Torrgas pilot plant in Groningen was further developed to optimise the innovative technology involved even more. Curious about the Torrgas principle? Take a look at this video clip.
