The gateway to Western Europe
The Netherlands aims to become the gateway to Western Europe for hydrogen producers and exporters from around the world. The Dutch seaports have excellent infrastructure for this purpose, the North Sea is ideally suited for the installation of wind turbines, and a Dutch hydrogen network is being built. This transport network can be created in the relatively short term by reusing existing natural gas pipelines.
Cross-border connections
The hydrogen network will connect to large-scale underground hydrogen storage sites and to the transport networks of neighbouring countries like Germany and Belgium. By 2030, Gasunie will have established four cross-border connections with Belgium and four with Germany. This will allow hydrogen producers and transporters to reach large parts of Western Europe quickly and efficiently. And Dutch companies, in turn, can import hydrogen. Reducing CO2 emissions is a high priority throughout Western Europe, and industrial demand for sustainable hydrogen will increase.
Gasunie is building the infrastructure
Gasunie is committed to developing the necessary infrastructure in good time. This results in the construction of import terminals at the ports, the development of underground hydrogen storage and the creation of the cross-border hydrogen transport network.
