Looking for a range of talent for the energy transition and to ensure reliable gas transport

Gasunie is growing. In 2022, Gasunie has already taken on more than 100 permanent employees, as well as more than 200 people starting on temporary assignment. And many more job vacancies are around the corner. Who do we need? And what makes it so interesting to work at Gasunie? Cindy Snitjer and Jan Willem Knol, both recruiters at Gasunie for three years now, talk about this. Cindy says, ‘In the coming period, a wide range of positions will become available via Gasunie’s career portal werkenbijgasunie.nl. Not only do we need technical staff, but we are also looking for many other specialists across the country.’

Recruitment for the transition

Jan Willem continues, ‘Gasunie is looking forward to a green future. That is why we are involved in various projects within the energy transition, such as for hydrogen, heat transport, green gas and carbon storage. A lot of talent has to be recruited for all these projects.’ Cindy adds, ‘Our company is itself in transition. As a result, we are looking for people who connect, are curious and have a more commercial leaning. In the meantime, the safe and reliable transport of natural gas continues. Though natural attrition, too, there is room here for new people.’

Jobs at every level

We need to get a lot of work done if we are to realise our ambitions. That’s why Gasunie is looking for many different types of employees at all levels, from people who have completed their middle management (Dutch MBO 4) education to candidates with university degrees. We are looking for technicians, engineers, commercial business developers, operators, project assistants, project managers, project planners and IT specialists, for example. Cindy says, ‘Potential candidates find us through LinkedIn, through the networks of our staff and, naturally, also through our career portal werkenbijgasunie.nl.’ Jan Willem adds, ‘For temporary assignments, we post vacancies with our regular external suppliers.’ 

Surrounded by professionals

Cindy says, ‘Naturally, 9 out of 10 motivation letters mention the energy transition, but there are more reasons why candidates want to come and work here. Gasunie has a digital ambition and is advanced in the area of IT. This makes it a very educational and challenging place for everyone, from the IT novice to the seasoned IT professional. In the various departments you are surrounded by professionals who continuously challenge you so that you can get the best out of yourself. A good example is the EemsEnergyTerminal, an LNG terminal that was completed and commissioned within just a few months. That is really incredibly fast and something to be proud of as a Gasunie employee.’

Attractive company

Jan Willem says, ‘Many of our projects relating to the energy transition are large scale and complex, involving large budgets. That, combined with the need for change, holds a lot of appeal for potential candidates. What employees also like is the active staff association with its various clubs, like a go-kart club, cycling tour club, golf club and a sailing club. And, obviously, the excellent employment conditions and benefits.’ 

Opportunities for everyone

Cindy says, ‘At Gasunie you can be yourself. And you gain confidence in what you do. The era of micromanagement is behind us. If you are ambitious, there are plenty of opportunities to grow and continue to develop. I myself started as a secretary, but I was able to switch over to recruitment, and I have made further steps within this area. I have taken hold of the reins and am this way shaping my own career path.’ Jan Willem adds, ‘I think it’s great that Gasunie pays a lot of attention to diversity and inclusion. There are opportunities for starters, trainees, people with poorer job prospects – but also for employees who want to learn or grow. I also like that I can shape my work myself. You have all the freedom, and in a number of departments hybrid working is standard practice these days.’
