The LNG terminal in Eemshaven: developed in 2022 to increase energy security and reduce dependency on Russian natural gas. EemsEnergyTerminal is a subsidiary of Gasunie and Vopak.

The LNG terminal is a plant that converts liquefied natural gas, which has been transported by ship to Eemshaven, back to its gaseous state. It can then be transported through the country’s underground gas network located near the terminal. Using the terminal means that an additional 8 billion cubic metres (more or less) of natural gas can be supplied to the Netherlands every year.

The terminal has gone from plan to completion in a record time of only six months. EemsEnergyTerminal has been operational since 16 September 2022.

  • Important new phase for the future of EemsEnergyTerminal at the port of Eemshaven

    Date

EemsEnergyTerminal has entered an important new phase in determining whether the floating LNG terminal at the port of Eemshaven will be kept in operation for a longer period. Today, an Open Season was launched to gauge the interest of market parties in the import of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the near future. Such collaboration is essential for keeping the terminal operational after 2027. A final decision on this is expected at the end of this year.

  • EemsEnergyTerminal may be kept at Eemshaven for longer for security of energy supply and the energy transition

    Date

In partnership with the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy, Gasunie and Vopak are exploring options to keep operating the EemsEnergyTerminal for longer than initially planned at the port of Eemshaven (Groningen). This survey will not only look at LNG but is also intended to explore ways to bring about a future, rapid transition to a sustainable energy system; one where hydrogen and carbon capture and storage play key roles.

  • One-year milestone for EemsEnergyTerminal

    Date

Last Saturday marked exactly one year since EemsEnergyTerminal officially became operational (the first gas day). Construction of the floating LNG terminal was and is a necessary intervention to ensure sufficient natural gas. There’s no doubt that the terminal has made us less dependent on Russian gas in the Netherlands and Europe. Of course we can’t let one year of the EemsEnergyTerminal pass us by just like that. The video takes us through a remarkable sequence of events at breakneck speed.

  • Vopak to become shareholder in EemsEnergyTerminal

    Date

Gasunie and Vopak entered into a principle agreement whereby Vopak will acquire 50% of the shares in EemsEnergyTerminal. This transaction will be subject to a number of conditions, including the approval from the competition authorities. The transaction is targeted to be completed latest by 1 October 2023.

  • EemsEnergyTerminal at full production

    Date

EemsEnergyTerminal is ready to run at full capacity. Most of the work planned since the start in September last year has now been successfully completed. In the coming period, the terminal can supply 8 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year.

However, developments are following in rapid succession. A month ago, it was announced that several initiatives are being worked on to increase temporary LNG import capacity in The Netherlands. This means that it is currently being investigated whether EemsEnergyTerminal's current facilities can process more LNG into gaseous natural gas. EemsEnergyTerminal's ambition is to be able to handle 9 billion cubic meters of natural gas before the end of this year, and then to grow to 10 billion cubic meters of natural gas.

  • EemsEnergyTerminal wins Langman Prize 2022

    Date

On Wednesday 11 January 2023, the Langman Prize for 2022 was awarded to several organisations involved in the creation of EemsEnergyTerminal. The prize was accepted by Gasunie board member and director (Participations and Business Development) Ulco Vermeulen and Cas König (CEO, Groningen Seaports).

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management (Rijkswaterstaat), the province of Groningen, the municipality of het Hogeland, Gasunie, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy (EZK), Groningen Environment Department, the Port of Groningen, Groningen Seaports, RWE, Enexis, Royal Wagenborg and the Water Boards were important partners. They played a crucial role leading up to the actual construction. In the end, the terminal went from plan to completion in a record time of only six months. EemsEnergyTerminal has been operational since September 2022.

Jury chairman, Jouke de Vries, who heads up the Executive Board of the University of Groningen: “This group has proved, within a period of six months, that the North Netherlands is making significant strides in accelerating the energy transition. They have shown leadership, inventiveness and stamina, thinking and acting from new perspectives. The organisation of manpower, brainpower, permits and materials have all revolved around one goal; completing this terminal as quickly and effectively as possible. It has boosted the economy in the north of our country and has, above all, reduced our dependency on Russian gas”.

    About the Langman Prize
The Langman Prize is awarded annually during the North Netherlands New Year's reception, an initiative of the North Netherlands Foundation. The Foundation is striving to establish more partnerships in the north. The Langman Prize is awarded to a person or organisation who does not set limits on how they think, act, manage or tackle issues, therefore boosting awareness and/or economic development in the north.

  • EemsEnergyTerminal wins award at World LNG Awards

    Date

The EemsEnergyTerminal has won an award at the 22nd World LNG Summit & Awards in Athens, Greece. The terminal came first in the 'Outstanding Contribution to the Industry 2022' category. The National Natural Gas System Operator (DESFA) provided this award.
The criteria for the award included innovation and knowledge. According to the organization, EemsEnergyTerminal received the award for successfully realizing the terminal on time and on budget and starting its operations on 15th of September receiving the first LNG commissioning cargo.

Mantas Bartuska and Diederik Top received the award on behalf of the EemsEnergyTerminal team. More information can be found here.

  • Tenth LNG carrier arrives at EemsEnergyTerminal

    Date

Last week another LNG carrier, the tenth so far, arrived in Eemshaven. It has taken around six months for EemsEnergyTerminal to develop a floating terminal here, which can take delivery of additional LNG imports. This project is making an important contribution to security of gas supply and boosting efforts to reduce reliance on Russian gas. Construction took place in record time, thanks to the hard work of hundreds of employees and many partners. The flow of LNG supplies is also going well at the moment. The capacity of ten LNG carriers is roughly equal to one billion cubic metres of natural gas.

In September one of the floating storage and regasification units (Eemshaven LNG, the red one) was at a different location in the port due to additional technical requirements. Both installations have since been reconnected. EemsEnergyTerminal is expected to be running at full capacity in a few weeks.

Watch here for a brief overview of the last few months.

  • Another milestone for EemsEnergyTerminal

    Date

Last week, the EemsEnergyTerminal team focussed all its efforts on testing the LNG installation. This was a success and natural gas from the terminal is now flowing through GTS's national gas grid for the first time. This brings us another step closer to independence from Russian gas.

Various technical tasks will take place in the coming weeks. The terminal is expected to be operating at full capacity by late November or early December.

  • First natural gas available from new floating LNG terminal in Eemshaven in mid-September
