Largest heat transport project in the Netherlands reaches major milestone
Press release
WarmtelinQ, a subsidiary of Gasunie, is currently working at full speed to complete a remarkable construction milestone for the heat transport network linking Rotterdam, The Hague and Leiden. A heat transport pipeline measuring no less than 1,562 metres is being installed underground using horizontal directional drilling (HDD). The work is expected to be completed later today.
The completion of this drilling operation marks an important step towards the realization of WarmtelinQ. Together with its contractors, WarmtelinQ is currently constructing the final section of the heat transport network. Reaching this milestone brings the commissioning of one of the Netherlands' most important heat infrastructure projects another step closer.
Since 2022, WarmtelinQ has been developing an underground heat transport network that makes residual heat from the Port of Rotterdam available to households and businesses in the province of South Holland. Heat that would otherwise go unused is being given a valuable new purpose. Once completed, approximately 120,000 homes and commercial buildings will be able to benefit from this sustainable heat source.
'This drilling operation demonstrates what we are technically capable of achieving to enable the energy transition,' says Inge Aardse, director of Heat Transport at Gasunie. 'Over a distance of more than one and a half kilometres, we are installing a heat pipeline underground without causing major disruption above ground. This requires expertise, precision and close collaboration. At the same time, we are helping to build an energy system that is more sustainable, more resilient and less dependent on fossil energy sources imported from outside the Netherlands.'
Contributing to Energy Independence
WarmtelinQ contributes not only to the decarbonisation of the heat supply but also to the Netherlands' energy independence. By making smart use of locally available residual heat, dependence on fossil fuels imported from abroad is reduced. This helps create a more resilient and future-proof energy system.
About WarmtelinQ
WarmtelinQ is a subsidiary of Gasunie and is developing a regional heat transmission network in South Holland. Through this network, residual heat from the Port of Rotterdam will be transported to municipalities including The Hague, Rijswijk, Voorburg and Leiden, as well as surrounding communities. The project contributes to a reliable, affordable and sustainable energy system for the Netherlands.
