Aramis is a project focusing on building new CO2 infrastructure from the mainland to offshore platforms and from there to depleted gas fields deep under the North Sea where the CO2 will be stored.
Aramis is a joint initiative of EBN, Gasunie, Shell and TotalEnergies. The infrastructure can be expanded further in the future to accommodate new CO2 suppliers (industries where CO2 is captured) and include more depleted offshore gas fields.
Why is this project needed?
Major steps need to be taken if we are to achieve the targets of the Dutch climate agreement, the coalition agreement and the European Green Deal. It’s essential that we cut carbon emissions on a major scale and one of the ways to keep down the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere is to capture CO2 at its source and store it. In the fight against climate change, this approach must go hand in hand with the development of sustainable energy sources. Aramis aims to make a significant contribution to reducing CO2 emissions from ‘hard-to-abate’ industries, i.e. industries where it is very difficult to cut emissions.
Gasunie’s role
With our knowledge and expertise in the area of gas transmission through pipelines and of compression and storage, Gasunie can make a valuable contribution to the development of CCS. To help achieve this, Gasunie is partnering with Porthos and CO2next.
National coordinated energy project
The central government coordinates decision-making for energy projects of national importance. The Minister of Climate Policy and Green Growth (MCGG) is responsible for this. Aramis is a government-coordinated energy project and is going through the project procedure under the Environmental Act for the necessary permits and spatial integration.
Participation is an important part of the procedure. The procedure incorporates several opportunities for formal and informal consultations and advice. There will also be opportunities to submit responses, objections, or an appeal during the procedure to documents at set times during the procedure. In collaboration with the MCGG, Aramis will arrange various participation moments.
The MCGG and the Ministry of Interior and Kingdom Relations are jointly responsible for the spatial integration of pipelines and storage facilities.
Aramis takes next step towards investment decision
Date
The Aramis project, a transport infrastructure for large-scale CO2 reduction, is making progress towards a final investment decision. The project is essential for achieving the climate goals and preserving the industry. The government recognized this in the supplementary climate package. The initiators Gasunie, Energie Beheer Nederland (EBN), Shell, and TotalEnergies are working on completing the technical design phase and have recently decided to amend their cooperation.
Aramis CCS project reaches important new phase with development of infrastructure
Date
The Aramis CCS project has taken an important new step by reaching the FEED (front-end engineering design) phase. The partners involved in the project – Gasunie, TotalEnergies, Shell and EBN – have reached an agreement on the further development of key parts of the required infrastructure, including the offshore transport pipeline and the technical/operational integration of the source-to-sink CCS value chain. This brings the realisation of the largest CCS project in north-western Europe one step closer.

Annemarie Manger, Head of Joint Team at Aramis
Date
Annemarie Manger took up her post of ‘Head of Joint Team’ of the Aramis project on 11 April 2023. In this new role, she heads a multidisciplinary team drawn from staff of TotalEnergies, Shell, Energie Beheer Nederland (EBN) and Gasunie.
