Carbon Connect Delta
Project
In the Delta region of Zeeland and Flanders, Gasunie is working in a consortium with Smart Delta Resources, North Sea Ports and Fluxys on a study of the feasibility of CCUS in the region.
Under the name Carbon Connect Delta, the cross-border consortium is making plans that could lead to a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions, equivalent to about 6.5 megatonnes a year, from industries in Terneuzen, Vlissingen and Ghent.
The CO2 can be stored in empty gas fields under the North Sea, possibly at one of the CCS projects that Gasunie is already involved in: at Porthos in Rotterdam, at Athos in the North Sea Canal region, or at facilities farther afield.
The study is looking at transporting the CO2 by pipeline as well as in ships.
The first results of the feasibility study are expected by the end of 2020.
