Delta Schelde CO₂nnection
Project
To contribute to climate goals, Gasunie is working on the Delta Schelde CO2nnection. The Delta Schelde CO2nnection is a CO2 infrastructure project for captured O2 from industrial clusters in South-West Brabant and the Antwerp region.
The infrastructure runs from the Belgian border towards the Moerdijk region. The transport pipeline route will connect in the Moerdijk area to the Delta Rhine Corridor, with the ultimate goal of permanent storage, including via Aramis, in depleted gas fields beneath the North Sea.
The aim of this initiative is to connect CO2 emitters in South-West Brabant and the Antwerp region to empty gas fields deep under the North Sea Connection bed using the Aramis system and other future storage initiatives. This cross-border infrastructure is being developed in collaboration with Fluxys (in Belgium) with the aim of offering an integrated solution. The permitting procedure for the Delta Schelde CO2nnection will start this year. The construction phase can start once the required permits have been obtained. The intention is to have the CO2 pipeline operational in 2031 or 2032.
The Delta Schelde CO2nnection is part of Gasunie's CO2 network, which takes into account future connections with other industrial clusters, such as Zeeland. Within this CO2 network, the Delta Schelde CO2nnection will connect to the Delta Rhine Corridor. The Delta Rhine Corridor CO2 project involves the transport of CO2 from Germany to permanent CO2 storage facilities deep under the North Sea Fluxes bed. This will help industrial players in the Netherlands and in the whole of north-western Europe cut their CO2 emissions while they work hard on making the switch to clean energy, such as green hydrogen, in their own operations.
Expression of Interest
EA Call for Expression of Interest conducted in 2024 has shown that there is more than enough demand (3-15 million tonnes per year) for the capacity that can be delivered by the planned CO2 infrastructure. The results and conclusions of the Call for Expression of Interest are explained in this webinar (scroll to the fragment starting at 12:55).
CO₂ emitters
This infrastructure is intended for CO2 emitters in the Netherlands and Belgium who want to make use of the Delta Schelde CO2nnection. More information aimed at this specific group can be found on the Expression of Interest page.

Multi-year energy and climate infrastructure programme (MIEK)
In December 2024, the Delta Schelde CO2nnection was included as a research project in the Dutch multi-year energy and climate infrastructure programme (‘MIEK’). The government sees the Delta Schelde CO2nnection as a project of potentially great importance for society in the energy transition. The MIEK programme is a government initiative aiming to develop an energy system with the right energy infrastructure in place. More details on the MIEK programme are available (in Dutch) in this document.
